Lucien Tessier: Every Inch a Hero

Track captain and sprinter Lucien Tessier on the lawn at Boston College.

From time to time I post articles that I’ve done for other publications. Here’s my profile of Captain Lucien Tessier, USMC and Boston College track captain in 1965. His story is a sad one, of

Captain Lucien Tessier, USMC

a good man’s life that ended far too soon.  It is a story that needs to be told, however, and I feel privileged to be the one who has done so. Boston College inducted him into its athletic Hall of Fame on September 7. A well deserved, and much overdue recognition of a wonderful young man.

Thank you so much, Mr. Burke, for your coverage of Lucien. He was my cousin. His late father, Robert is my mother, Pauline ‘s brother. Lucien’s death is still a very clear, haunting memory from my childhood and I think of him often. I am sending a copy of the article to my mom who lives in Florida (she doesn’t have a computer) and she is so excited about the article. Thanks again for this tribute to an outstanding hero!

I worked with his father for many years and enjoyed the article.

I was a student at Boston University when I literally “ran into” Lucien…we both ran track for our respective schools. I remember Lucien as a gentleman, someone easy to talk to and friendly. It pains me to just find out Lucien is no longer with us and died so early. He was also one fine competitor, we both ran the 100 and 220 yard dashes…he beat me just about every time, yet still encouraged me on, I was very new at the sport and did not participate in high school track and field. Lucien could have been a great friend, but the current affairs and graduation denied that opportunity for me. Rest in peace, Lucien, I will never forget you.
